Commonpoint Queens: Spark Internship Program at Camp Poyntelle
As a Spark Intern, your experience will incorporate two core sets of responsibilities. These fall into the buckets of “Jewish Life” and “General Counselor”. In the former, you will be spending considerable time alongside our Direct of Jewish Life to fashion Judaism and Israeli Culture-oriented programming for campers ages 6 to 16. Whether it is programming for our Mitzvah Madness projects, organizing fundraising/charity opportunities, or helping to innovate and anchor our Shabbat services, you will certainly find yourself bringing to the fore your connection between our Jewish values and your personal experiences. As a member of the general staff team, you’ll also have the same traditional camp experience that we all love! Living in the cabins alongside other staff from Israel, the US, and all around the world will mean being able to engage your bunk’s campers directly. You’ll be with them at most activities, during special events, and be a role model as you live our values each and every day!
Jewish Life
-Mitzvah Madness: This is a program designed to allow each and every one of our campers to participate in a project to “give back” to the camp community. The goal is to have an impactful project or initiative for each age cohort. In the past, campers have built flower boxes to beautify camp and created new peer programs. You will develop and implement ideas to build on our past successes.
-Jewish Anchors: Whether it is our Hebrew word of the day, morning Boker Tov song, or supporting our Shabbat Services and programs, you will be a key player in the meshing of Judaism in daily camp life.
-Special Events: By supporting our Program Directors, you will help to put together our major Israel Day program, and help the Director of Jewish Life, Cantor Bill, in putting together a Jewish Song Leading elective.
-Regular Meetings: You will meet weekly with our Director of Jewish Life and Camp Directors for the purpose of supervision and feedback on all initiatives/programs, and projects.
General Counselor
-Daily Obligations: You will be living in a bunk with 2-3 other counselors/specialists and a group of 10-12 campers. As such, your connection to this group is important. You will have the privilege of being a full bunk counselor at meals, during other special events, at some/most activities each day (depending on the needs of Jewish Life programming), and during evenings/nights. This means you will sit OD, have time off alongside bunk staff, be asked to help with ancillary daily duties.
-Camp Team: All of our staff come to Poyntelle with the understanding that real training and camp administration is involved to work cohesively. In light of this, you will be working alongside all other bunk staff under the leadership of the camp directors to help with anything and everything that a typical summer contains. Be ready for it all!
