Songleader Position at Temple Tikvah
Temple Tikvah is a warm and welcoming URJ-affiliated Reform congregation located in New York near the Queens/Nassau County border. Our community of about 200 families is highly engaged with a thriving religious school and vibrant adult and youth choirs.
The position will start September 2023 and run through May 2024 and will include directing our youth Kol Simka choir.
Skills
We are seeking a personable, talented, creative individual who will enhance the education of our religious school students through music:
Knowledge of and passion for Reform Jewish music
Competency in guitar or other instrumental self-accompaniment
Proficiency in performing prayers and songs taught to religious school students
Skill in singing with young children
Effective communication skills to build rapport and develop warm relationships with both children and adults
Organized, creative thinker who will work cooperatively with our Rabbi and Religious School Director.
Experience in directing a youth choir a plus.
Experience as a camp song leader a plus.
Responsibilities
Work with the Rabbi and Religious School Director to integrate Jewish musical education into our Religious School (which meets Sundays, 9:30 to 12:00).
Provide musical direction and leadership for the Temple’s student Kol Simkha choir, which currently meets for one-half hour before Religious School, preparing the students for family and holiday services.
Direct the youth choir at and co-leading monthly family Friday night Shabbat services.
Help prepare Religious School students for grade services.
Effectively communicate with the students’ families regarding services and rehearsals.
Opportunity to co-lead additional Friday night Shabbat services during the year for interested and qualified candidates.
Reports to: Religious School Director and Rabbi
Hours: 3-4 hours per week for the 26 weeks religious school is in session + monthly family Shabbat Services; additional hours available to co-lead some Friday night Shabbat services
Salary Range: TBD dependent on skills and scope of the position
