2023 Hillel International Scholarships

Handeli First-Year Student Scholarship: 

Awarded annually to two graduating high school seniors who are preparing to seek a bachelor's degree at an accredited college or university in the United States or Canada. Applicants must demonstrate a record of leadership and/or volunteer service in any aspect of their local community, and must also self-identify as Jewish.

Award amount: $3,000

Renewable for up to three additional school years, in addition to the first year. Not renewable after fourth school year/payment or student’s completion of an undergraduate degree, whichever comes first.

Knapp Campus Leadership Award:

Awarded annually to a full-time student seeking a bachelor's degree at an accredited college or university who demonstrates extraordinary leadership abilities and has a minimum GPA of 2.5. Applicants must self-identify as Jewish and commit to attending at least one Hillel event in the upcoming school year. Previous attendance at Hillel events is NOT a requirement for this scholarship.

Award Amount: $3,000

Renewable for up to two additional school years, in addition to the first year. Not renewable after the third school year/payment or the student’s completion of an undergraduate degree, whichever comes first.

Knapp First-Generation Student Award:

Top applicants will have a current GPA of 2.5 or higher, and a demonstrated impact of leadership, entrepreneurship, and/or volunteerism in their local or campus community. To qualify as a first-generation student, the applicant’s parents/guardians must not have completed a four-year college or university degree.

Award Amount: $3,000 per year 

Renewable for up to three additional school years, in addition to the first year. Not renewable after the fourth school year/payment or the student’s completion of an undergraduate degree, whichever comes first.

Hillel Graduate Student Award:

Given annually to a Jewish student who will be attending graduate school in the U.S. or Canada in the upcoming school year who has demonstrated academic excellence and made a difference in their community. Applicants must have completed or be on track to complete their undergraduate degree by June 30, 2023, and be attending graduate school in the fall of 2023. Applicants must self-identify as Jewish and commit to attending at least one Hillel event in the upcoming graduate school year. Previous attendance at Hillel events is NOT a requirement for this scholarship. There is no requirement for the concentration of study.

Award Amount: $5,000 one-time award

Who is eligible for these scholarships?

  • Current high school seniors or students on a gap year program are eligible to apply for the Handeli First-Year Student Scholarship

  • Current high school seniors, gap year students, college first-years, sophomores, and juniors who identify as first-generation college students are eligible for the Jules and Gwen Knapp First-Generation Award. 

  • Current college undergraduates (current first-years, sophomores, or juniors) are eligible to apply for the Jules and Gwen Knapp Campus Leadership Award. 

  • Incoming or current graduate students are eligible for the Hillel Graduate Student Award.

When are applications due?

The application deadline for Hillel International Scholarships is March 1, 2023 at 11:59pm EDT.

Do applicants have to be Jewish in order to be considered for an award?

Yes, in order to be considered for a Hillel International scholarship, applicants must identify as Jewish. Applicants who have at least one Jewish grandparent or who have formally converted to Judaism will be considered.

When will scholarship recipients be notified? 

Please review our scholarship timeline below:

  • NOW: Hillel International Scholarship opens.

  • March 1: Hillel International Scholarship Program application deadline.

  • March 1 - May 1: All applicants are reviewed by the scholarship committee.

  • June: Award recipients are chosen and recipients announced.
