Repair The World: Queens/Long Island Teen Program Coordinator, Part-Time

ABOUT

Repair the World mobilizes Jews and their communities to take action to pursue a just world. We believe that service in support of social change is vital to a flourishing Jewish community and an inspired Jewish life. By 2030, Repair will inspire and catalyze one million acts of service towards repairing the world.

Repair the World’s signature program, Repair the World Communities, engages young adults in social change around education and food justice in 6 cities. In 2015, Repair the World NYC was launched and opened a storefront community space, called “The Workshop”on Nostrand Ave in Crown Heights, Brooklyn.  The Workshop serves as a hub for our work in Central Brooklyn, operating primarily a workspace for our Fellows by day and a vibrant event space for all Brooklynites during evenings and weekends. The Workshop has shifted to be a disaster relief distribution center in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2017, Repair the World launched in Harlem, developing an incredible partnership with the JCC Harlem and numerous service partners throughout the neighborhood.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

Over one-third of Repair the World NYC’s volunteer engagement involves families with children and teens. In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, we saw a massive increase in both the need for volunteers and in volunteer engagement. Repair the World NYC piloted a successful four week Teen Virtual Service Corps in the summer of 2020 to engage teens more deeply in the work of supporting our communities. Building off of this, the program expanded its teen work with a twelve-week spring service-learning program cohorts in Manhattan and Brooklyn.

This summer, the work will continue with a six week program in Manhattan, Brooklyn and in Queens/Long Island.  Teen participants will engage in approximately twelve hours of programming per week. Four-five hours of in-person small group volunteering with service partners on Tuesdays and Thursdays and two-three hours of full group service and learning on Wednesdays. All in-person service will follow strict COVID-19 precaution protocols.

Repair the World is new to Queens and Long Island, and is excited about the possibilities that engaging teens in these areas will present!
